Marketing for Tradies

Marketing for tradies in Perth, built around the phone actually ringing

Marketing for tradies comes down to a short list: whether you show up in the map when someone searches your trade plus their suburb, whether the phone gets answered, and whether the calls are jobs you actually want to quote.

Your Google Business Profile
does more work
than your website.

Search a trade plus a suburb on a phone and Google shows a map with three listings before you reach the ordinary blue links.
Every one of them carries a call button.
Someone with a dead hot water system or a leaking roof taps one of them, and the first person to answer is already in front. That makes the profile the asset and the website its support. Reviews are the part that is easiest to leave too long, so we set the review request to go out the moment the job is signed off, because that is when it reliably happens.

Proof this works

What actually decides who gets the call

A trade business does not win work on one thing. These are the parts that decide whether the call comes to you.

The levers we work, in the order they usually pay:

+
primary category, and the service list underneath it
+
a service area set to where you genuinely drive, not where you wish you did
+
review velocity and replies, not just the total count
+
real photos of your own jobs, added on a schedule

Done together, your listing stops being a listing and starts being the thing that wins the call.

Suburb searches and "near me" decide the job, not "Perth"

Your service area is not one keyword. "Plumber Perth" and "plumber Bayswater" are different searches with different competition and different intent, and the suburb one sits closer to a booking.

The phone call is the conversion, not the form.

The reporting you have probably been shown counts form fills, because forms are easy to count. Plenty of trade enquiries never touch a form at all, and if the call is not measured the reporting is fiction.
That means measuring:
Calls placed from the website
Calls placed from the ads
Calls placed from the Google Business Profile
Only calls long enough to be a real enquiry, so misdials and hang ups do not inflate the numbers
Which suburb and which service actually produced work
Which ad produced work, so the rest can be cut
A missed call at 2pm on a Tuesday can be a lost job, because the caller simply moves down the list. Sending traffic at a phone nobody is free to answer burns the budget for nothing. On the site itself, the job of a mobile homepage is a tap to call button, your trade, your area and your licence number visible without scrolling.

What we actually do for a trade business

Three workstreams, run together. Most trades are only doing the first one, and only halfway.

The profile

Primary category, service list, service area, hours and photos of your own jobs, rebuilt so Google reads what you do and where you genuinely drive.

The pages

Why lead quality beats
lead volume

Quoting is the real constraint in a trade business. There are only so many hours to drive to a site, measure up and write the quote, and those hours come out of billable time or out of your evening, so a big lead count is not a win on its own.
So we tighten before we widen:
+
Geo targeting set to the radius you will genuinely drive
+
Negative keywords for cheap, how to, DIY, courses, jobs and apprenticeship
+
Ad copy that states the job types you take
+
Qualifying questions on the form instead of a bare name and number
+
A minimum job size stated up front, so the wrong enquiries self select out
Leads that are out of area, price shopping, insurance work you do not touch or chasing a DIY answer all cost you time and return nothing.
Not sure whether the profile, the site or the phone is costing you the jobs?

Seasonality is real, and your budget
should move with it.

Trade demand in Perth is not flat across the year, and a flat monthly budget quietly wastes money in the quiet stretches then runs dry in the busy ones.
Your own booking sheet will tell you the exact shape of it, but the drivers are not mysterious:
Air conditioning and split system work lifts through the heat
Roof leaks and storm damage follow the winter fronts
Hot water systems fail in the cold snaps
Landscaping, paving and outdoor work get booked ahead of summer and ahead of Christmas
Anyone working with builders feels the January shutdown, then the rush when it ends
Build the content, the reviews and the photos before the season rather than during it. If your competitors are reading the same weather you are, expect competition, and click costs, to lift in the same fortnight you start bidding hardest. Planning the swing a month early does more for you than a bid tweak on the day.

If your book is full, we will tell you to stop spending

If you are booked six weeks out and already turning work away, more leads cost you money and can cost you reputation, because unreturned calls turn into bad reviews. The better move:

+
pause the ads
+
lift your prices
+
shift the mix towards higher value jobs rather than paying to generate quotes you cannot get to
Signal
Paid search
The organic base
Switching it off
Off on a Friday, back on when you need it
Cannot be switched on the week you need it
Cost while your book is full
Paused, so it stops costing you
The same whether you are flat out or not
Reach beyond your radius
Not bounded by geography
Bounded by how close you are to the person searching
Over time
Produces calls straight away
Compounds, and is what you fall back on when the pipeline thins
The mistake is dismantling the organic base because you had a good quarter.

What a first cycle can include

A sensible first cycle for a trade business is:
The Google Business Profile rebuilt properly
The service and suburb pages that matter most, written and published
The review request flow set up so it runs without you remembering
Ads brought in once the phone side can handle them, not before
Founder-led, so the person planning the work is the person doing it
No account manager relaying your questions to someone you never meet

Who this is for

Perth trade businesses sitting in one of these spots:
01
The map brings the calls and the website is holding the profile back
02
A tight radius of a few suburbs rather than a whole metro term
03
Plenty of calls coming in, but the wrong jobs
04
Quoting time is the bottleneck, not the lead count
05
Phone enquiries that never get counted as leads
06
Demand that swings with the season against a flat budget
Questions

Questions Perth tradies ask.

My Google Business Profile already gets me calls, do I still need a website?+
Yes, and for reasons beyond looking legitimate. Google uses your website to work out which services and suburbs your profile should show for, so a thin site holds the profile back. You also need somewhere to send ad clicks, and a profile alone cannot do that. Keep the site simple:
+
what you do
+
where you go
+
your licence number
+
a tap to call button
+
real photos of your work
How much should I be spending on Google Ads for my trade?+
We work it back from your average job value, your close rate on quotes and how many quotes a week you can write, rather than starting from a number we made up.
What if my budget is not enough?+
If the maths says the budget you have in mind cannot buy enough clicks to produce steady work in your radius, we will tell you that before you commit instead of taking the money and reporting on impressions.
Can I manage my Google Business Profile myself and just pay you for the rest?+
You can, and the parts you are best placed to own are the ones we cannot do from a desk.

I only work in a few suburbs, is SEO even worth it for me?+
If anything it is more worth it, not less. A tight radius means fewer competitors to beat and a shorter run to the map pack than fighting for a whole metro term. We build the pages around the suburbs and services you actually service, then use paid search only for the areas you are too far out to rank in.
Can I use a virtual office address to rank in more suburbs?+
Fake addresses and virtual offices get profiles suspended, and we will not set one up for you. What works is honest: a real address, and paid search to cover the suburbs you are too far away to rank in organically.
I get plenty of calls but they are the wrong jobs, can you fix that?+
That is a targeting and messaging problem and it is fixable. We:
+
tighten the geo targeting to your real radius
+
add negative keywords so DIY and job seeker searches stop triggering your ads
+
state the job types and minimum size in the ad copy so the wrong enquiries drop out before they call
+
add qualifying questions to the form
Fewer calls, more of them quotable.
How long before I see anything happen?+
The work
When it shows
Google Business Profile
Weeks, because reviews, categories and service areas feed the map results directly
Organic rankings for competitive suburb and service terms
Months, and anyone promising otherwise is guessing
Ads
Straight away, though give them a few weeks of data before judging them, because the first fortnight is spent learning which searches to cut
